About

Matthew teaches compulsory modules (land law and contract law) and an elective module (Negotiations) to undergraduates at the Law School, while also serving as module leader for the latter.

Aside from the formal teaching, Matthew co-ordinates the extra-curricular opportunities for students to develop their skills of negotiation, client interviewing, mediation, appellate advocacy and arbitration, and coaches students in between 25 and 30 external competitions annually. Recent highlights of coached teams include:

  • Wales Mooting Champions 2022 and 2023
  • International Chamber of Commerce Mediation Competition (2023)- Best Newcomer Team award
  • Singapore Mediation Competition (2021)- Double Gold Medal in Negotiations and Mediation
  • Mediate Guru Virtual Negotiations Competition Winners (2022 and 2023)
  • Kent Legal Triathlon- Best Mooter, Negotiator and Application Advocate (2022)
  • Lex Erudites Mediation Competition (2022)- Best Mediator
  • PACT ODRC Negotiation Competition Winners (2022)
  • PACT ODRC International- Best Mediator (2023)
  • International Negotiations Competition (Rome)- 4th Place (2023)
  • UK Mediation Competition- Best Mediator (2023)
  • England and Wales Client Interviewing Competition- 2nd (2022), 3rd (2023)

Matthew has utilised his experience and contacts within these competitions to host and convene a number of these competitions at Swansea University, as well as at other institutions. Apart from convening the Wales Mooting Competition since 2021, Matthew has hosted and organised the International Negotiation Competition (2017), the International Client Consultation Competition (2020-2022) and the International Maritime Law Arbitration Mooting Competition (2023).
